Can I claim compensation for a hit and run car accident if I did not call the police at the time?

A dangerous driver went right into the back of my car, they were going pretty fast and the impact heavy, I badly hurt my back and neck, they just drove straight off and I was in shock, they didn’t even check if I was alright, I was tired and in pain and couldn’t believe what had happened, I was up set so I just went home. This was a few days ago now and I have been trying to sort my insurance out to get the car fixed and I am still in pain in my back and neck, I think I have whiplash
