Can I claim compensation for my child in a bus accident if I was not with them?

My son, who is 16 was taking the bus into town to see his friends when the bus crashed into a car and he was injured, is he old enough to claim compensation?
The accident was the bus drivers fault and my son has kept his ticket, could we claim from the bus company?
