Hi Sandra
We hope you're safe and well and haven't been harmed. But if you have, let us help you.
Many people assume that if they're harmed in the likes of an assault or mugging that they have no recourse unless the criminal is caught and brought to justice. However, it's possible to make a claim for compensation via a government agency called the
Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority, also known as the CICA.
You don't have to be the direct victim of a crime to make a claim. If you've been injured while trying to prevent a crime, stop an offender or in an effort to remedy the consequences of a crime, such as by assisting the police, you can also claim.
To make a claim through the CICA, you'll need to report the crime to the police who'll provide you with a crime reference number (CRN). The claim must also be launched within 2 years from the date of the crime, which is shorter than the limitation period in personal injury claims.
It's possible to recover compensation for:
- The injuries sustained
- For loss of earnings
- Special expenses, like travel and medication costs
- Bereavement and funeral payments if the victim sadly died, and;
- Payments for costs relating to any children or other dependents.
We sincerely hope this helps and if you have any other questions, our live chat team is here to help. Send them a message via the box, bottom right. They can even offer you a No Win No Fee bonus code.
