Do I have to press charges against my friend if I was bit by their dog?

I was bitten by my friends dog while I was in his front garden.
I needed to have stitches and get injections in A&E in hospital, how much could I be entitled to?
If I do claim will I need to press charges against the owner and will their dog be put down?
