Do I need a prosecution in court to claim compensation for personal injuries from an assault?

I suffered a personal injury in a public place through no fault of my own and I would like to claim compensation.

I am just enquiring into whether I'd be eligible for a claim. About 2 years ago I was assaulted (ABH) and it went to crown court however the man was not found guilty.

It happened in the town centre and I did nothing to provoke him, the police arrived at the scene of the crime and arrested him and I was taken to hospital so I should have a medical and police report available.

I believe it was a racially aggravated assault as he was drunk had abusive to me for no good reason.

i would have to contact the police constabulary who dealt with it to get the correct date and investigation number.
He punched me and caused me to loose a tooth and rip my lip open which requires cosmetic surgery to fix, which has left my one side of my mouth scarred and misshaped.

Would I be eligible to make a claim for compensation for this incident?
