Fell into open hole in street works, broke my foot and out of work, can I claim compensation?

Hey there, I had an accident in a public place that was not my fault and I suffered a personal injury.

I fell in dip in the pavement where the council were doing work on and l broken a bone in my foot, I am unable to walk on it for a few months.

The workers had just dug up the pavement to get to pipes or cables and left the hole open with nothing or no one around it to prevent an accident, no warning signs, no barriers or tape, it was a hazard.

I walk up the street all the time and just walking as normal didn't notice the pit in the ground and stepped over into it, landing funny on my foot and twisting my ankle.

Would I need to go to the local council for compensation or will I have to get a no win no fee solicitor to sue them for negligence to claim compensation for my personal injury?

Will I also be entitled to money for loss of earnings as I have had to miss work?

Thank you
