How do I make a claim for road traffic accident with a bus?

I was stationary in a traffic queue on a main road and I was hit by a bus which had come out of the bus lane and struck the back of my car.
I suffered severe whiplash and had to go to the hospital, how much could I be entitled to?
Do I need to claim compensation from the driver or bus company?
