How long after a misdiagnosis can a claim be initiated for medical negligence?

I have recently been diagnosed with diabetes, before this I had been in and out the doctors for checks and they had never found it, can I claim compensation?
I found out I have had diabetes for years according to the GP can I still make a claim?
How much could I be entitled to for misdiagnosis of diabetes?
