How long does it take to claim compensation for an injury from a bus accident?

I was in an accident that was not my fault and I have been injured, I was a passenger on a bus when the driver got into a crash and I hurt my back, I have my ticket from the bus ride and I would like to make a claim for whiplash, how long would it take to claim compensation from a bus accident?
