How much time to I have to claim compensation for a hit and run accident?

I was in a hit and run accident 2 years ago and I am still suffering from back pain, the other car went into the back of me and drove off without sharing details, I have reported the accident to the police but no one has been caught, do I have a claim for compensation? How long do I have to put a claim in for this?
