Public liability for trip and fall personal injuries on dangerous broken walkway, can I claim?

I had an accident in a public place when I tripped and fell while I was walking my dog in the park when I happened to step on an dangerously broken and uneven footpath which looked like some kind of heavy machinery like a truck or lorry had gone and driven over the public walkway, cracking it so some parts of the concrete had risen and become a trip hazard, I caught my foot on the broken stone, which caused me to turn my ankle from under me damaging my ligaments and twisting my foot, tripping and falling over, I fell on my knee, hurt my leg and grazed the palms of my hands and elbow.

Now I am taking time off work because my sprained ankle and injured leg have given me a limp were my job requires me to be on my feet all day and the cuts are nasty and unsightly.

Could I sue my local council for negligence not repairing the paving, get compensation for my injuries or claim back loss of earnings? I have photographs and witness to the incident and any free legal advice would be appreciated, thank you
