Unsafe practice led to an accident at work, suffered a hand injury,out of work, how can I claim?

I am currently off work with a severe hand and wrist injury caused by heavy boxes falling out of a hire van that had no racks to store the boxes safely which is supposed to be the practice by law.

I have been off work for a month and have just seen a physiotherapist who says I have strained my tendons and fractured my wrist and will be off for at least a further 2 weeks to rest my hand, my company are paying me on sick leave for as they said it's a work related injury but can I still claim against them to get compensation for my injuries and get money for any loss of earnings they don't cover?

Does it cause problems with your employer if you claim against the business, like they might try to get rid of you for taking legal action against them for a pay out or will I be legally protected? I don't want to get laid off because I have worked there for years and don't want to fall out with colleagues. If the accident was another employees fault if i claim will he get in to trouble?
