What can I do if my employer forces me to lift boxes that are too heavy for me?

Hi

I'm looking for some advice. My boss is making me lift boxes that are too heavy for me. I'm able to lift a few but after about 20 minutes my arms get tired and sore. He expects me to lift these above my head and onto some metal shelves but I need to get my colleague Gary to help me. I've complained to my boss and he basically just laughs and tells me to get on with it. I'm worried I might injure myself. What should I do?

Thanks

Sam

Good afternoon Sam

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. It can be quite stressful in these situations but it's important to be aware of your legal rights. Your employer cannot force you to lift items at work than exceed certain weight limits. When lifting above your head this weight limit is the lowest of all. This is between 3 and 7kg for women and 5 and 10kg for men. The best thing to do is take photos showing the weight of these boxes and inform your manager of your legal position. You can ask for alternative work, for example. If you'd like to discuss this with our team in more detail, feel free to call us on 0800 073 8804

Thanks

Ed
